"It's not about academic or technical skills. It's about culture and motivation." David White states his point about the principle of Visitors and Residents in Online Engagement. It came to my mind all those people that would tell me "It's a generational thing", or "you grew up with computers". It really doesn't matter how old you are or the fact that you used computer since you were a toddler. It is the motivation that drives you to be involved, collaborate, and share through social media. These are some examples in my family of how technology is being used as residents and visitors. My aunt My aunt retired about 5 years ago from 30 years of serving as teacher in a preschool. Now, she has gone back to work when they offered her a position as a Principal. She is excited to use blogging or any other tool to collaborate with her teachers. She is motivated and asking questions about how she can communicate with parents in an online platform. She also started shopping online, using face-time to talk to her daughter and grandson, and becoming more confident on how technology could be use as part. My nieces Her granddaughters just finished high school, and use social media to communicate with friends, share pictures, etc. They have never used blogging in high school to share their work, collaborate with peers, etc. They use technology as a tool and a way to keep in touch with their friends. My story I started using social media to collaborate, share, and learn more about how to become a Dual Language educator. As a new teacher, I needed to find resources, and mentors who could help me through my journey. I couldn't find much support, so I started creating resources, directories, and join chats to help those that had similar needs. | These are some characteristics you'll find of Digital Resident and a Digital Visitor according to David White. I think it is great that you referenced your family members and how they are located differently on the spectrum as resident vs. visitor. I too immediately thought of family. Some of my family members are moving more towards resident because my wife and I live across the country, and they want to stay connected.
