Curriculum and Instruction I believe that: Standards are a framework to guide a teacher’ instruction on what children need in order to succeed at their grade level. When we look at how curriculum is aligned to the standards we must also look at how is aligned to our students’ needs. We should also keep in mind what children can do developmentally at their age and how teachers can differentiate instruction by planning vertically viewing at a standard in literacy and math that is above or below the grade level. I believe it because: Curriculum should be a guide to a teachers instruction, but also a incorporate the time for children to problem solve, ask and answer their own questions, and embrace creativity. With the use of Common Core Standards, Next Generations Standards and ISTE Standards, Teachers Instruction should integrate leadership and collaboration skills, and give students the opportunity to discover their own personal passions and strengths. My brother and I talk about our education experiences and he reaffirms that always thought that I was the "smart" one (as well as my mother) because of our difference in school achievement. I would get frustrated once we would talk about it. It is not school that makes you smarter, It Is the way you solve things for yourself. I am no means smarter than him or anybody else. I think we have to outsmart ourselves. If there is a challenge, we must always look for resources to resolve our own problems to clear all obstacles and reach our goal. Everyone has different abilities and not because students struggle certain subject reading, algebra, calculus, etc. student should be labeled "not smart". There should be a support team at school, where students feel they can ask for help inside and outside the classroom. We want students to feel successful and not as a failure. How can we as educators lead all of our diverse learners to become independent learners, follow their passions, and change the world. How can I prepare my students with a balance of foundational skills and 21 Century skills to question, research and solve their own problems? Lots of issues and discussions: Assessment , Curriculum Mapping ,Language Instruction Strategies,Differentiation, And RTI I’d like to talk about: Dual Language Programs and their Benefits Explain your example: I worked and collaborated with dual language teachers since I can remember. Biliteracy is a must for students to become leaders, have linguistic and cultural competence and obtain invaluable personal benefits in communication, job opportunities, and cultural inclusiveness. There are two types of Research dual language models. 90/10 Model which starts with a 90% target language, 10% English as oral language and 50/50 which 50% of the day is in english and 50% is in the target language. Not only does this program benefit our monolingual students, but in fact in increase english language development for English Language Learners. This is a win win program. There are 20 different ways to approach teaching a language, but a Dual Language Program teaches with a communicative language design, meaning that children learn to use basic communicative skills as well as academic language. When working in a dual language program we need to know that all children deserve a biliteracy education. Parent and Community Involvement I believe that: Parent and Community Involvement is essential when creating a culture of achievement at your school. With the Parents and Community involvement, students feel the support and love when it comes to learning. believe it because: School is a home where everyone gives their time to make it a better place. We can see parents organizing events to fundraise for a sport teams, classroom materials, and other events. In addition it is very important for parents to have be involved and have voice when it comes to important decision making in school’s budget, and now LCAP that requires community input. Parents and/or mentors are also students first teachers, and supporters of their child’s education. Everything that they do or say will influence a child's’ life. As a community we also have to support parents on how to bridge the learning from school to home and viceversa and instill the value of communication with child’ teacher. I have seen how Parent and Community involvement has increased the bonding between families when they work together to uplift a school. You can see parents involved in the classroom, outside the classroom as Noon Duties, organizing fundraisers for non-profit and classroom materials, and inviting parents to join. Students feel safe, involved, proud and confident when they see their parents and neighbors working to make their school a safe and better place. Lots of issues and discussions: Advocacy and Decision-Making,Volunteering,Training, Communication, Student Learning And Student health and safety. I’d like to talk about: Community Involvement. Explain your example: It is very important to show our parents and community what we can offer for students. Education is one part of school community, but we can also extend services such as health, cultural, recreational, social support, and other programs. Working at a school with students with family in the military have services that can help them transition to a new home and school environment. With community involvement we can also create a welcoming environment to diverse cultures and use their knowledge and background to share with us new learning opportunities. At the different schools I haved work with, We have create multicultural fair where students and their families have shared their culture through dances, songs, food, traditional clothes and language. When working at a school community involvement is a must to reach out through services, and welcome and engage diverse cultures in our learning environment. Discipline and School Climate/Culture I believe that: There should be a culture of Do not Harm when we talk about school climate and culture. In addition clear and consistent expectations of school climate in order for students to feel safe. I believe that school climate should be welcoming where people feel they want to be part of the school culture. I believe it because: There needs to be clear high and positive expectations for students at school. We need to communicate this to all staff and students in order for them to know how to behave with courtesy and respect with other children. We need a disciplinary policy where students not only know the expectations, but also when there is a problem we must intervene by reteaching, model and provide students with positive skills that will lead him to a positive behavior. Lots of issues and discussions: Climate and prevention, Expectations and consequences, equity and continuous improvement, training And communication I’d like to talk about: Restorative Practice Explain your example: Restorative Practice engages students in teaching them how to behave based on the school expectations. We have always had the mentality that when students misbehave, we should have a punishment, but what if the child doesn’t know how to behave? It is up to us to teach students about common courtesy, We need to provide examples of how we can use affective statements in the classroom to model for our students how to use these statements to describe how they feel. There needs to be consistency and commitment as a school culture. We need to provide staff with training and help them shift their thinking on disciplinary pracitces. As we use a restorative practice we need to remind ourselves that we want students to learn and not shut down their learning opportunities for a wrong choice the made. Technology I believe that: Technology enhances learning and creativity opportunities for children and teachers. I believe it because: I have seen what students can accomplish starting kindergarten. If students are given the tools and the opportunity they can apply existing knowledge to create something new. Students can learn how to research, answer their own questions and learn how to evaluate information. Students can showcase their published researched at a Gallery of Experts, where they can talk about NGSS Standards, and how they incorporated collaborative work, and develop a cultural understanding, In addition, with the use of technology teachers have access to Professional Development 24/7. With the use of social media they can network with other educators which can support each other on relevant topics such as implementation of CCSS. Teachers have the opportunity to design, implement, evaluate learning experiences customizing lessons for a diverse population of learners. Teachers can differentiate students learning experience and provide students with the tools to have global awareness. Lots of issues and discussions: Assessment and Evaluations, Consistent and Adequate Funding, Digital Citizenship, And Enterprise Architecture I’d like to talk about: Ongoing Professional Development Explain your example: As a leader at your school it is crucial to have, an effective implementation plan, as well a consistent and adequate funding plan when looking at the purpose of using technology at our school, but we can have all this in place, but teachers are not integrating technology in the classroom. As leaders we must have teacher input and collaborative to create a vision for our school in place as well as ongoing professional development. Teachers will integrate technology in the classroom when they are given the time to explore and know how to use it in the classroom. Professional development should be differentiated because everyone is at a different stage when it comes to digital literacy. There are different ways to approach professional development. The best trainees are the same teachers on campus. With peer modeling, and support your staff can become digital literate and integrate the tools for students to enhance their learning and creativity.
I have been teaching for 4 years now at the Chula Vista Elementary School District. I have had the pleasure to work at 3 different schools during those 4 years teaching. My first year, I was as a long term sub as a kindergarten teacher in a dual language 90/10 program.
